Based on my A Levels I knew I was passionate about marketing but didn’t want to go to University, so an apprenticeship seemed like the best option to fulfil my desire to continue my learning but more specifically I wanted to gain practical skills.
I had previously worked in a larger organisation, but I believed a smaller company may be able to give me more personal guidance and a wider variety for the job role I wanted. This was important to me as I wanted to build a wide range of skills which would help me shape my career in the marketing industry. From day one I was working with senior members of the team, including the Managing Director, and had opportunities to get involved in everything from account management through to operations and finance. My apprenticeship gave me structured learning whilst also gaining experience in an exciting sector.
While I finished my apprenticeship a couple of years ago, I’m continuing to benefit from the skills I learnt. I’ve stayed at Blueberry and my role’s even more varied than before – in a typical day I can be meeting clients, delivering training internally, dealing with the finance and accounts and helping plan our latest marketing campaigns! The range of opportunities my apprenticeship gave me was incredible – I was studying the industry I wanted to establish my career in whilst having a hands-on role to play in a company who were passionate about sharing their expertise with me.
Anyone who is thinking of doing an apprenticeship or a company who is considering beginning their own apprenticeship scheme I cannot recommend it more highly – it has opened doors for me earlier in my career than I expected. My apprenticeship at Blueberry not only kickstarted my career development but it also grew my confidence – I’m a much more outgoing person because of it!
I believe the rewards of apprenticeships are two-fold, the apprentice receives their training whilst a company gains a trained individual in their trade which is tailored exactly for their business needs and they develop within that company’s culture. Everything I learnt during my apprenticeship has stuck by me and I continue to reap the rewards of it.
I’m continuing my learning at Blueberry and our Progression Pathways are enabling me to work towards my AAT this year, I’m also in the process of buying my first house which is very exciting. I’m looking forward to what the future has in store for me career wise and personally!
